Eco lodge campsite

Blue Hill, St Helena

The World’s Most Remote Campsite. An ecologically sensitive tourism hub in Saint Helena.

Eco lodge campsite Blue Hill, St Helena

A modular, off grid, zero-carbon campsite in the island’s Green Heartland.

MWAI designed a sustainable, expandable eco-tourism campsite in Blue Hill, Saint Helena — one of the most remote inhabited places on Earth. The project supports the island’s growing tourism sector following the opening of its international airport in 2017.

The design features tent-like structures split into three zones: reception and facilities, operator lodge, and guest pitches. All buildings are car-free and removable, with lightweight raised platforms to preserve the landscape and meet planning requirements.

Sustainability is embedded throughout: solar-heated water, photovoltaic electricity, composting toilets, rainwater harvesting, and greywater filtration. The lodge includes a biomass oven and evokes Saint Helena’s architectural vernacular with pitched roofs and verandas.

The modular system allows for easy expansion, with adaptable cladding and insulation. MWAI’s approach balances ecological responsibility with cultural sensitivity, creating a blueprint for future development on the island.
