Balancing old and new through materiality and proportion.
Set along the Thames in Chiswick’s Strand on the Green Conservation Area, this Georgian home was reimagined by MWAI with a deep respect for its historic setting. From initial research to planning approval in 2021, the design process was rooted in craft, proportion and contextual awareness.
The proposal retains the original brick wall along Thames Road and introduces a new decorative storey in reclaimed brick, creating a clear visual dialogue between past and present. On the river side, the design responds to the charm of the towpath with carefully proportioned railings and glazing. A new conservatory, framed in lightweight materials and detailed with clay tiles, reflects the Georgian vernacular and adds a layer of warmth and light.
This is a home where heritage is not preserved in stasis, but celebrated through thoughtful transformation.
