An Architect’s House
Shepherds Bush, London
A West London terrace reimagined for modern family life. The kitchen is deliberately understated. Utilities are concealed behind bespoke, hand-painted panelled doors, a bespoke scullery-style table, Calacatta marble, and Crittall-style glazing.
An Architect’s House Shepherds Bush, London
From scullery table to skylights: a story of space and light.
A MWAI Turnkey project. This three-storey mid-Edwardian townhouse in Shepherds Bush was reimagined by MWAI director Matthew Woodthorpe as a modern family home that honours its architectural heritage. The project focused on creating a versatile living space at the rear of the house—an area that now serves as kitchen, studio, homework zone and social hub.
The original side passage was replaced with a lateral extension featuring four frameless skylights, while the rear wall was pushed into the garden. The floor was dropped by 20cm to achieve 2.6m ceiling heights, enhancing the sense of volume and light.
The kitchen is deliberately understated. Utilities are concealed behind bespoke, hand-painted, period-correct panelled doors. There are no wall cabinets or dominant hard surfaces—just a scullery-style table, Calacatta marble, and Crittall-style glazing. The result is a space that feels open, calm and quietly luxurious.
Beyond the living area, MWAI redesigned the media room, children’s bedrooms and family bathroom. The master bedroom now includes a bespoke framed washstand in a minimalist ensuite.
This is a home shaped by craft, clarity and care—where every detail supports the rhythm of daily life.
