Jamestown Market, St Helena

JAMESTOWN. ST. HELENA
2013

Restoration and refurbishment of Jamestown’s Historic Grade I Listed open air market. AS part of DFID’s Jamestown 2020 vision, MWAI were asked to provide a concept for the Market’s rejuvenation – in preparation for the opening of the new international airport on the island.

The Market is a rare example of a decorative prefabricated iron structure (circa 1865), purpose built for shipping to the British Colonies by Gwynne & Co, London.

The proposal is for a sensitive restoration of the historic superstructure and installation of a new low tech sustainable ‘market day’ structure in the centre. Locally sourced volcanic concrete is being proposed for the primary structure of the installation.
