Kent MArch - Biophillic Design

MArch UNIT 4 & MWAI research
2019

As part of our continuing Kent University MArch Unit 4 tenure, and commitment work on the ‘Yes to Life Cancer’ outreach centre, MWAI are developing our theory and application of the principles of biophilic design in architecture – resulting in our own specific architectural response to the biophillic design conversation.

Below is the work of Jo Bossom, an MArch Distinction graduate from Unit 4, Kent University.

Biophilia is defined as the inherent human inclination to affiliate with nature. Biophilic design, an extension of biophilia, incorporates natural materials, natural light, vegetation, nature views and other experiences of the natural world into the modern built environment. There are 14 physical design principles that relate directly to human orientated relationships to environmental, spatial and psychological factors.

Our work on biophilic design and zero carbon architecture is combined in the ‘Yes to Life’ project, a not for profit cancer charity, and in collaboration with Westminster University.

This year, Jo Bossom, a Kent University MArch Unit 4 Distinction graduate, developed a detailed proposal for the use of biophilic design with a local community mental health Arts charity in Kent – Hoo Cares.

The academic year, MWAI will explore continue to will explore this avenue in our new Unit what this space.
