Kent MArch - casting & formwork

MArch UNIT 4 & MWAI research
2019

At MWAI and through our work in KENT MArch Unit 4, we are using research and process to explore our interest in the application of cast materials, the technology and sensory, material quality.

The research has led us to propose a paper to DFID and the St Helenean Government on the use of Volcanic concrete on the island of St Helena, to propose rammed (earth) concrete for a recent low impact project in Berkshire, and explore polishing, casting and surface materials in our work in practice.

At Kent we encourage students to explore casting, module, technology and application in their development work, as part of the design process. This had led to student’s research on plastic bag casting, rammed earth, biophilic imprinting, brick making, plaster machetes, and final cast technological models.

We will continue to pursue this in this year’s academic programme.
