Sensitive refurbishment of a 1930s Wells Coates residence in Palace Gate

Modernist Icon kensington, london

MWAI was appointed to restore a Grade II* listed apartment designed by renowned Modernist architect Wells Coates, located in Palace Gate, South Kensington. Built in the 1930s, the apartment is a rare example of Coates’ pioneering work in residential design — a legacy MWAI approached with deep respect and architectural sensitivity.

The brief called for a pristine, white and elegant interior with flexible living accommodation. MWAI responded with a minimalist fit-out that honours the original Modernist intentions, integrating bespoke joinery, purpose-built cabinetry and carefully selected lighting to create a calm, refined atmosphere.

The project reflects MWAI’s ongoing interest in post-war listed buildings and the challenges of working within heritage constraints while delivering contemporary comfort. Collaborating with Interior ID and contractor Hengrave, MWAI provided full design and project management services.

The result is a home that feels both timeless and personal — a quiet tribute to Coates’ legacy, shaped by craft, clarity and restraint
